EWRI E-Update

The Environmental & Water Resources Institute (EWRI) Governing Board Endorses the New Society Governance Model, and Candidate for the 2005 ASCE President Elect

Dear EWRI of ASCE Members
EWRI has the great benefit of having many members who are strong leaders. A few of these members continue to share their leadership skills with the ASCE community. Conrad G. Keyes, Jr., ScD, P.E., P.S., Hon.M.ASCE, the founding EWRI of ASCE President, and Dennis Martenson, P.E., F.ASCE, EWRI of ASCE member, were both selected by the ASCE Board of Direction Nominating Committee to be presented to the membership as official nominees for the office of President-elect.

The EWRI Governing Board officially endorses Conrad G. Keyes, Jr. to become the 2005 ASCE President-Elect and asks you to vote for him in the upcoming June 2004 election.

Conrad Keyes, Jr., Founding President of EWRI of ASCE, has an impressive resume of service to the Society and he remains an active member participating in significant ASCE and EWRI of ASCE programs. He participated on the 1998, 2001, & 2003 ASCE Report Card Task Force; was a member of the ASCE Board of Direction (1990-94); and more recently was instrumental in launching the Water Infrastructure Security Enhancements Standards Committee (which in collaboration with AWWA and WEF is in the process of developing guidelines for water infrastructure security). Also on the June ballot will be the issue of ASCE Governance Restructuring. To be implemented, the amendment to the ASCE Constitution must be ratified by two-thirds of the members voting in the national election this June. The EWRI Governing Board asks you to vote your support for the new governance model. Under the new governance model the ASCE Board of Direction will be smaller, will provide more balanced representation of the Society membership, will broaden the leadership base and will decentralize more of the decision-making. The details of the new governance model can be found online at www.asce.org/governance/.

In June 2004 your ASCE Ballot will arrive inside of ASCE News. In June 2004 your ASCE Ballot will arrive inside of ASCE News. Remember, your opportunity to influence the ASCE national election is now. Please take a few moments and vote in the June 2004 ASCE National Election!

Best Regards,

Thomas Rachford, President, on behalf of the EWRI of ASCE Governing Board

After reviewing several nominations, the Nominating Committee recommended and the Governing Board agreed that Jeanette Ann Brown, P.E., DEE, F.ASCE become the EWRI Governing Board Official Nominee for the 2004 position of EWRI Vice President. The position on the Board will start on October 1, 2004 and 2005 respectively. Currently, Jeanette serves as the ASCE Presidential Appointee to the EWRI GB.

The first stop for Dam Removal 2004 is Ann Arbor, Michigan-home of the University of Michigan Wolverines! The workshops will be held in the Dana Building, home of the School of Natural Resources and Environment. The Dana Building recently underwent a major renovation where its hundred-year-old infrastructure was updated and newer facilities were adapted. All aspects of this transformation were performed on an environmentally responsible level with all aspects of the building now demonstrating "Green" building practices. Featured speakers for this workshop include Joan Harn of the National Park Service on the topic of Permitting in addition to John Boland of Johns Hopkins University discussing the Economic Impacts of Dam Removal.

University of California, Berkeley August 16-17, 2004

Sunny skies and the San Francisco Bay Area will be the beautiful backdrop for our second Dam Removal Workshop at the University of California, Berkeley. The campus acts as an oasis of nature for this part of California where the wooded 178-acre central campus area is known for its architectural and historical landmarks. The workshops will be held in Evans Hall and will feature such speakers as Brian Rheinhart of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on Aesthetics and Recreation as well as Mark Capelli of National Marine Fisheries Service discussing the Geomorphologic/Hydrologic Impacts of Dam Removal.

Ft. Collins, Colorado August 30-31, 2004
