Presentations on Major Wetland Restoration Projects (Everglades, CALFED, Coastal Louisiana, and Mesopotamian Marshes) - Presented as a part of the EWRI Program for ASCE Annual Conference - Oct 22, 2004
A key topic of discussion at the ASCE Annual Conference was EWRI Program focusing on Major Wetland Restoration Projects. The wetland restoration sessions were structured to offer perspectives on major restoration projects that might inform coop eration in the Tigris-Euphrates River Basin and discussions on the Mesopotamian Wetlands Restoration. Water Resources Engineers "Raise the Bar" for Professional Body of Knowledge - American Academy of Water Resources Engineers (AAWRE) Introduces Specialty Certification Program

The American Academy of Water Resources Engineers (AAWRE), a subsidiary of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), announced the introduction of a Specialty Certification program for water resources engineers. The Specialty Certification is a voluntary, post-license credential that provides recognition of advanced expertise in a technical specialty, superior experience, strong professional ethics and a commitment to life-long learning and continuing professional development.

In support of ASCE's policy to broaden and deepen the body of knowledge for practicing engineers, AAWRE's certification was developed to improve the practice, elevate the standards and advance the profession of water resources engineers. Certification provides an advanced qualification, beyond licensure, that is recognized by clients, employers, peers and the public. It demonstrates a specific technical mastery within civil engineering and a strong commitment to professional ethics and development.

Applications for the water resources engineer certification will be accepted online beginning in January 2005. The announcement of the first group of certified water resources engineers is expected to take place at the 2005 World Water and Environmental Resources Congress in Anchorage, Alaska.

COMMITTEE NEWS

Call for Committee Members - Environmental Health & Water Quality Committee

EWRI's Environmental Health and Water Quality Committee (EH&HQ) is seeking members to help revitalize it with renewed activity. This committee is the place for you if you want to help advance the technical level of environmental health, water quality, and emerging public health issues, such as terrorism, emergency operations, diseases, contamination cleanup, and changes in the environment. Other topics under the Committee's purview include vulnerability analysis, risk assessment and management, and water quality protection. Activities include, among others, organizing technical sessions for EWRI Congresses, preparing publications on specific topics of interest, and mentoring students to encourage study in the field.

STUDENT NEWS

EPA Awards Research Fellowships
To help educate America's future environmental scientists, Dr. Paul Gilman, EPA Science Advisor and Assistant Administrator for Research and Development announced the award of 156 student research fellowships.

"One of EPA's highest priorities is ensuring that we have a well-trained scientific workforce that can address tomorrow's complex environmental issues," said Gilman. "Our fellowship programs are helping to produce new government scientists, academic researchers, and excellent science teachers."

EPA's research arm supports several fellowship programs designed to address our country's most important environmental workforce needs. Past fellows have undertaken projects in areas such as environmental toxicology, research on watersheds and the impact of human behavior on the environment. Awards are announced in two programs: the Science to Achieve Results, or STAR, graduate fellowship program and the Greater Research Opportunities or GRO fellowship program.

EPA is now accepting student applications for 2005 STAR and GRO fellowships. The deadline for preliminary applications is Nov. 23, 2004.
