Developed by ASCE, Guidelines for Designing an Online Contaminant Monitoring System provides information on designing online contaminant monitoring systems, including assessing the need for a monitoring system, locating instruments and sensors and responding to suspected contamination events. AWWA's Security Guidance for Water Utilities and WEF's Security Guidance for Wastewater/Stormwater Utilities, provide information for designers and owner/operators of drinking water and wastewater/stormwater facilities on design upgrades that improve physical security and techniques to improve management and operating practices to reduce vulnerabilities due to malevolent events. PDF versions of the documents are available online and may be downloaded at no charge. Limited hard copy versions of the publications will also be available in January 2005. To obtain copies, send an e-mail to wise@asce.org after January 10, 2005. The interim voluntary guidance documents will be the basis for the development of voluntary consensus standards, to be published in late 2006. Training materials for each of the guidelines is currently being developed and will be available in spring 2005. INDUSTRY NEWS New report on Science, Biodiversity and Sustainable Forestry & New RFP On January 4, 2005 the National Commission on Science for Sustainable Forestry (NCSSF) released a report entitled, Science, Biodiversity and Sustainable Forestry, presenting the findings of the Commission to date. The Commission's findings are a valuable resource that will help forest managers, practitioners, researchers, and policy makers. The report presents 18 findings in four key areas: 1) landscape patterns; 2) disturbance dynamics; 3) biodiversity indicators; and, 4) adaptive management.NCSSF also is issuing a Request for Proposals (RFP) for a project to evaluate the success of Adaptive Management as applied by different organizations. The Findings Report and the RFP are available. Please contact Aaron Lien at 202-207-0006 for more information. The Commission has developed practical tools, new information from research, and integrated existing research into useable knowledge. The findings report describes the significance of this work for those who manage our forests. The Commission has completed about half of its initial five-year program to advance the science and practice of biodiversity conservation in sustainable forestry. The National Commission includes 16 leading scientists and forest management professionals from government, industry, academia, and environmental organizations. It is sponsored by a consortium including the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, the Surdna Foundation, the Packard Foundation, and the National Forest Foundation. The NCSSF is a program of the National Council for Science and the Environment (NCSE), a nonprofit and non-advocacy group dedicated to improving the scientific basis for environmental decision making. SEMINARS & WORKSHOPS Final Dam Removal: Lessons Learned Workshop Over the past year, EWRI has hosted four Dam Removal: Lessons Learned workshops across the country. The final dam removal workshop is February 10-11, 2005 at the University of Tennessee. Like its predecessors, this workshop will focus on what has been learned from actual dam removal processes and will not debate individual views on overall pros and cons. The workshop will feature six sessions including: Permitting; Economic Impacts; Biological Impacts; Social/Cultural Impacts; Aesthetics/Recreation; and Geomorphologic/Hydrologic Impacts. However, a large amount of functional overlap between the sessions is expected and will be encouraged. Each session will include a presentation by two dam removal professionals chosen to reflect diversity in experience and perspective, mixing both intra and extra regional experience to enhance dialogue and understanding. The workshops will close with an open discussion of means to improve cross disciplinary communication of lessons learned and improved decision making processes about dam removal. >> Register Online Today! >> For More Information >> EWRI staff member Katie Gorscak may be contacted for additional workshop information.
