News from the Water, Wastewater, and Stormwater Council

The Water, Wastewater, and Stormwater Council (formerly the Infrastructure Council) continues to develop new Task Committees and new products for EWRI. As part of these on-going efforts, there are several areas where these Task Committees are seeking volunteers.

The Water, Wastewater and Stormwater Council consists of four Technical Committees. The Water Supply Committee is chaired by Doug Jones (djones@chastainskillman.com). Current efforts by Task Committees under this group include reports on Intermittent Water Distribution Systems and Neural Network Technology in Water Supply Problems, as well as a new effort to review River Bank Filtration. In addition, the Technical Committee, serving in an advisory role, provides recommendations for several water-related awards including the Freese Award and Lecture. Persons interested in assisting in these areas should contact Doug at the e-mail address above.

The Water Pollution Engineering Committee is currently being rejuvenated and we are pleased that Bill Boyle has served as the chair during this process. Karen Karvazy (kkarvazy@chastainskillman.com) currently serves as secretary beginning in October. There are several new Task Committees which have been formed which are actively seeking new members. These include a Committee on Sustainable Design in Water Pollution Engineering (chaired by Helene Hilger - hhilger@uncc.edu ) and a Joint Task Committee with the Environmental and Groundwater Council on Environmental Processes of Contaminants (chaired by Jeff Talley - jtalley1@nd.edu ). There is also a Joint Task Committee with WEF and the Pipeline Division of ASCE to update Manual of Practice No. 60 on Design of Gravity Sanitary Sewers. This last group is currently seeking individuals with expertise in the formation of hydrogen sulfide in sanitary sewers. If you can help, please contact Richard Thomasson (thomasson@pbworld.com).

The Residuals Management Committee has continued to build upon their knowledge base. Most recently, the Committee presented a joint workshop with the Florida Water Environment Association on the future of residuals management. This workshop drew over 200 attendees from around the state. The Committee looks forward to presenting this "road show" in other areas of the country. If your Section or Branch would be interested, please contact the current chair, Richard Tsang (tsangkr@cdm.com).

Finally, the Stormwater Infrastructure Council continues to explore the evolving technologies of non-point source stormwater, stream, and lake pollution treatment, conveyance, controls and modeling. There are two task committees currently active under this Technical Committee. The first, chaired by Gordon England (England@bhiinc.com), is conducting BMP product testing, and working in conjunction with other groups in EWRI. The second group, chaired by Stuart Stein (sstein@gky.com) is working with Urban TMDL's. If you have interest in either of these areas, or in any other area under this Committee's scope, contact the current chair, Stuart Stein.

If you are interested in joining any of these committees, feel free to contact the Council Chair, David Dee (dee@pbworld.com) or any of the chairs listed above. Most of the Committees and Task Committees are planning on meeting in Anchorage at the 2005 EWRI Congress. The meetings generally take place the weekend before the Congress, so if you're planning on coming to Anchorage, get there early and attend one of the meetings.
