Council/Committee Communications EWRI's new organizational structure (as presented in the Winter 2005 edition of Currents) was a hot topic at the annual February meeting of EWRI Councils. Overall, I believe that the refocused and streamlined approach was well received. The new structure reinvigorated discussion of various communication issues. Several comments were made about the need for better lines of communication between councils and their committees, as well as across council boundaries.

One idea for enhanced communication throughout the various councils and committees was to open up e-rooms as a "read-only" resource for those outside of each specific council's e-room. Another idea, relating to website usage as a communication tool, was for each Council to operate an independent site which would be linked from the main EWRI site. Finally, a suggestion to solicit corporate sponsors for monetary or maintenance support of the EWRI website was made.

While the Communications Council's primary focus is on the Currents newsletter, we hope that these and other ideas for fostering better communication within our organization can be investigated. The Knowledge Based Management Task Committee is a newly formed committee under the Governing Board which will be working to manage Institute information. We hope to collaborate with them on some of these communication issues. Any additional comments are welcome.
