ASCE teams bound for Chile to study quake/tsunami impact

In an effort to learn from Chile's devastating 8.8-magnitude earthquake and tsunami on Feb. 27, ASCE will be sending three technical assessment teams to the South American nation in the coming weeks to study the performance of critical infrastructure systems. Teams from two ASCE institutes — Coasts, Oceans, Ports and Rivers Institute and Structural Engineering Institute — along with a team from the Technical Council on Lifeline Earthquake Engineering will investigate those areas of infrastructure that reflect their specialties and expertise. A total of 34 civil engineers will be in the disaster zone from April 5-17; return here in the coming weeks for updates on their progress.

  • Learn more about the ASCE Chile technical assessment teams, their missions, and who's on them.
  • Although the Chile and Haiti earthquakes have dropped from the headlines, the hard work of recovery goes on. Donations for relief remain welcome with ASCE's longstanding partner, the American Red Cross.

China's Sutong Bridge named 'Outstanding' project for 2010

The world's longest-spanning cable-stayed bridge, China's Sutong Bridge has been selected as ASCE's Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement for 2010. Chosen from a competitive field of five finalists, the winner was announced at the Society's OPAL Gala in Washington, D.C., Thursday evening. Near the east coast of China, the Sutong Bridge has reduced a four-hour commute between Shanghai and Nantong to an hour. The gala also paid tribute to the winners of ASCE's 2010 Outstanding Projects and Leaders awards, as well as winners of the Charles Pankow Award for Innovation and the Henry L. Michel Award for Advancement of Research.

ASCE's New Orleans Branch gave him its Lifetime Achievement Award in 1996.

So, You Live Behind a Levee!

So, You Live Behind a Levee!

Most people know that levees are built near rivers and lakes to reduce flooding risk, but what does it mean to live behind one? Are your home and loved ones safe from floods? How much protection does the levee really provide? What do you need to know to be safe? ASCE's new public education booklet, So, You Live Behind a Levee!, was created to answer those questions and more, and to help individuals and communities better protect themselves against future flood threats. Written for both the engineering and non-engineering public, it covers issues such as flood size and risk, signs of trouble, ways to reduce risk, and how to prepare for and respond to emergencies.

Turn Kids On to Engineering — Send Them to ASCEville

ASCEville home page

The Society has launched its first online presence dedicated to encouraging kids to explore the impact of civil engineering in the world around them and see the exciting challenges that engineers experience in their jobs. ASCEville.org, a new kid-friendly Web site developed by ASCE's Pre-College Outreach program, is designed to show that civil engineering is creative, rewarding and plays a vital role in our everyday life. The site's fresh approach includes engaging graphics, interactive activities and compelling stories of inspiring young engineers. "We're providing children with a fun, online village where they can see how civil engineers make a difference in our world," explains ASCE President Wayne Klotz, P.E., D.WRE. Parents, educators, and school counselors also will find valuable information about the history of engineering, engineering disciplines and career fields.

ASCE's mission is to provide essential value to our members, their careers, our partners and the public by developing leadership, advancing technology, advocating lifelong learning and promoting the profession.
